I agree with what you have said here Tamsin. I too believe libraries to be the heart of the school and a resource for everyone to use. Libraries offer a place for students to use their imagine and explore their interested through reading books. I love that you mention the importance of literacy development that is promoted through libraries and the resources provided within them. During my practicum the students had a block dedicated to going to the library and choosing a book to bring home and read. During this block the librarian would read the students a story prior to them choosing a book to get them engaged and excited about reading and why books are important. This leads to the point that by close a school library there would also be the loss of jobs for school librarians. Libraries are like you have said essential in children’s learning and development therefore the closure of them is not morally defensible.
